The Ministry of Love
From the faintly ridiculous of 2010's
The Knowledge to the sublime,
this year's PSP entry for the RAFTA One-Act Play Festival - held at
Whittle Hall, RAF Cranwell - was
The Ministry of Love.
Written by the
Daily Telegraph's theatre critic Dominic Cavendish, it is an adaptation
of the interrogation scene from George Orwell's
1984.
Set in George Orwell's dystopian vision of the future, the scene opens
on Winston Smith, alone in the void of the Ministry of Love. What
follows is a brutal physical and mental interrogation by O'Brien,
representing the omnipresent "Big Brother". The relentless mind games
gradually destroy the defiant Smith and he is eventually subjected to
the ultimate punishment - Room 101.
